Younger generations’ appetite for hands-on activities — what the internet has dubbed “grandma hobbies” — has reached far beyond Michigan. In North Carolina, John C. Campbell Folk School, the oldest folk school in the country, has a long waiting list for its teen program; just a few years ago, it was struggling to fill all the spots. Ely Folk School in Minnesota has also reported a post-pandemic influx of younger volunteers.
