Samuel Nowlin Reeves Jr., born on September 13, 1942, in Honolulu, Hawaii, led a life marked by personal struggles and a strained relationship with his son, actor Keanu Reeves. Of Portuguese-American, Chinese, Irish, and English descent, Samuel pursued geology at American University in Beirut during the early 1960s.
His life took a tumultuous turn due to substance abuse issues, leading to a prison sentence in 1992 for drug-related charges. In 1964, he married Patricia Taylor, a costume designer and showgirl from England, with whom he had Keanu. However, Samuel left the family when Keanu was just three years old, a departure that deeply affected their relationship. Despite efforts to reconnect, Keanu expressed a firm decision not to reunite, stating, “I haven’t seen my father since I was 15, and I have no plans to see him now.”
Samuel remarried twice and had two other child, Kim and Emma Rose. He passed away on January 26, 2018, in Ewa Beach, Hawaii, at the age of 75, reportedly due to complications from diabetes and Graves’ disease. His death marked the end of a life characterized by missed opportunities for reconciliation and a complex legacy overshadowed by his estranged relationship with his famous son.
